1.5 the report

The word festival is defined as a regularly recurring program of cultural performances, exhibitions, or competitions. This means that there are many kinds of festivals. Such as music festivals, film festivals, art festivals and all rounder festivals. The most common form would probably be music festivals, if not the most common definitely the most popular. The v festival is by far my favourite festival mainly because of the scale and atmosphere but the music has a nice mix. Some music festivals stick to one type of music while the v fest has a mix of all popular music. There are film festivals as well such as the end of the pier film festival. Film festivals are just as they say on the can they play films. They are often liked by people who are involved in making films because they can pick up new techniques. Then you can get all round festivals which have many types of arts being shown such as the
Edinburgh fringe festival. This type of festival has many different performances of different styles such as comedians, bands and gymnasts. They can contain pretty much anything you can think of. There are even festivals for adults such as wine festivals. These are mainly just festivals where people get together to try many wines but some contain entertainment such as bands and comedians.

1.4 Discussion notes

1) How would you decide how small or large a particular festival is?
A) i would decide this by seeing how many people attend the festival. if only about 200 people go i would say it is small. this is because i have been going to large festivals where there have been at least 2000 people attending.

2) What factors might determine the scale of a festival?
A) the size of the venue. how well it is advertised. and how well it does the year before

1.3 A3 Poster

1 How does the programme content of each of the festivals you have researched differ?
A) there are lots of types of festivals and i have researched a film festival(end of the pier) , music festival (v fest) and a mixed arts festival (edinburgh fringe)

2 In what ways might the content be determined or influenced by the scale of the event?
A) the bigger the festival the better things they can get. such as the v fest it is a well known festival with big acts playing so its scale has gone up

3 What have you noticed about the way in which different festivals focus on a single arts discipline or combine one or more?
A) some festivals stick to one style such as music (v fest) while others prefer to combine a few different types (fringe) the more types the festival has means it could get a bigger audience because it offers more variety

1.1 What is a festival?

The V Festival is a yearly music festival held in England during the second to last weekend in August. set up by Metropolis Music and SJM Concerts, the event is held at two parks at the same time which share the same bill; artists perform at one location on Saturday and then swap on Sunday. The sites are located at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex and Weston Park in South Staffordshire. Although predominantly a rock music festival, a wide range of musical genres are accepted; in recent years pop acts have become ever more common.

The End of the Pier International Film Festival is a no profit independent film festival based in west sussex. The festival began in 2002 and showed work by local film makers. It has since grown to showcase shorts and features from all over the world. There are also extensive educational and heritage projects surrounding the festival.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world’s largest arts festival. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the edinburgh international festival, it takes place in scotland's capital during three weeks every August alongside several other arts and cultural festivals, collectively known as the Edinburgh Festival, of which the Fringe is by far the largest.
